Last time on the blog we talked up some of the basics of better photography, the tried and true tips that have served photographers for decades. This time let’s look towards the cutting edge, the now and talk about the new iPhone 11 camera and what Apple has cooked up with their newest device!
What’s New with the iPhone 11
Whether you watched the Apple Keynote or have spent any time on social media in the past couple weeks, you’ve seen it, the sleek new phone with three(three!?!) lenses. They’re here, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
iPhone 11 Different Models, Different Cameras
While their constructions differs a bit, some the Pro and Pro Max are water resistant for up to 4 meters over the iPhone 11’s 2m for instance, the things we are all interested in is the camera! The image dominating the airwaves right now of the three lenses is of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, and that’s where the big difference is.
The standard iPhone 11 has dual 12MP cameras, one Wide and the other Ultra Wide. It has Portrait and Night modes, features Auto Adjustments and next-gen Smart HDR, as well as the ability to record 4k video up to 60 fps! It’s really a heckuva set up for a phone, and yet it isn’t the highest
The Pro and Pro Max meanwhile have all of that, the 4k video capabilities, auto adjustments and portrait and night modes, and a third lens: the 12MP Telephoto lens.
What’s a Telephoto Lens for?
Good question! While we aren’t the biggest camera heads here at Tapshare, (we like when they work and the pictures look good!) we did some digging to better understand what this third lens on the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max is good for.
Without all the jargon (do you know what focal length is?) a telephoto lens is specifically for taking photos at a moderate to far distances. So wilderness landscapes? Check! Sporting events? Check!
Tips to Get the Most Out of Your iPhone 11 Camera
With the new lenses and tech in iOS 13 there are a load of great tools to make your photos even snazzier (especially if you keep to the best practices we talked about last time)! Here are some tips to get even more out of your new iPhone 11 camera!
Go Ultra Wide, use the Telephoto Lens or Any Zoom In-Between
The iPhone 11 Pro camera has zoom levels ranging from .5X to 2X! Tap the 0.5X zoom setting to switch to the ultra wide camera or select 2X to activate the crisp telephoto lens. The detail you’ll see is astonishing. Simply swipe on the zoom level button and dial to get the exact right level of zoom for you get the most out of those 3 lenses! (We think, that’s how this works right?)
Slofie – The Future of Selfies?
Here’s a weird new trick Apple rolled out. Take your phone, switch to the front facing camera and use the Slo-mo option to take a slow-mo video, and so, we have entered the age of the ‘Slofie.’
One of the newest updates to the camera and its editing capabilities is the night mode! There’s no button for it in the UI so this is a tip your camera will take care of for you! Whenever you are attempting to take a shot in a low-light setting, the iPhone 11 Pro will automatically trigger this setting.
Note: While night mode triggers automatically, it won’t work with the ultra wide setting!
Use Your Aspect Ratio!
The new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro have a new aspect ratio to play around with! In addition to the standard 4:3 and 1:1 (rectangle and square respectively) ratios, there’s a further 16:9 ratio. This will change the overall shape of the photo you take, which can help you leverage the rule of thirds we talked about last time even better.
You have the basics of great phone photography, and now you have an incredible tool with that iPhone 11 camera and iOS 13.
